What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), and how can you get AI to recommend your business?

More and more purchase decisions start with a question to an AI assistant: “Which invoicing software do you recommend?” or “What is the best hotel near…?” GEO is the practice of working to get your business included in those answers.

What changes compared with traditional SEO

In traditional SEO, you compete for positions in a list of links. In an AI answer engine, there is no list: there is a written response mentioning two, three or five options and sometimes citing sources. You are either in the answer or you do not exist for that query.

Models do not always “search” your website in real time. They build responses from what they learned and what they retrieve at the time: review directories, comparison articles, Google listings, G2 or Capterra profiles, and forums. Your presence in those sources carries more weight than your own page.

The signals AI engines use

Although each engine works differently, the recurring signals are clear: consistent brand mentions across several independent sources; text reviews, not just stars, describing what you do and for whom; structured data confirming who you are, where you operate and how you are rated; and your own content answering specific questions in natural language.

  • Recent, verified reviews on the channels relevant to your category.
  • A complete, consistent business profile across all platforms: the same name, description and website.
  • Your own pages that clearly answer questions (“How much does it cost?”, “Who is it for?”, “How does it compare with…?”).
  • Structured data (schema.org) for your organization, reviews, FAQs and articles.

A GEO plan in four steps

First, audit: ask several assistants about your category and record whether you appear, how you are described and which sources they cite. Second, cover the channels those sources consult: for SaaS, these are often G2, Capterra and GetApp; for local businesses, Google Maps and Tripadvisor; for B2B services, Clutch and GoodFirms. Third, get verified reviews with descriptive text on those channels. Fourth, publish your own content answering the same questions people ask AI, and measure it monthly.

What does not work

Fake or purchased reviews: directories remove them, and models learn from directories. Pages stuffed with keywords but no real answers. Blocking AI crawlers in your robots.txt and then wondering why they do not cite you.

How PosRank approaches it

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. They share a foundation (useful content, authority and structured data), but GEO adds a focus on the sources models consult, especially third-party reviews and directories.

How long does it take to see a difference?

It depends on the engine. Those retrieving information in real time (Perplexity, AI Overviews and ChatGPT with browsing) reflect changes within weeks; those relying on training take longer. That is why monthly measurement is useful.

Should I allow AI crawlers to read my website?

If you want to appear in their answers, yes. PosRank allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended in its robots.txt and publishes an llms.txt file summarizing the site.
