How to appear in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews when someone searches for your category

Try it: ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for “the best options for [your category] in [your city or country]”. If you do not appear, this checklist shows you where to start.

1. Get your identity in order

Use the same name, one-sentence description and website across all profiles. Models cross-reference sources; if you are “Acme Solutions” on one and “ACME S.A.S.” on another, the signal weakens. Add Organization structured data to your site with your legal name, logo, email and country.

2. Get reviews where AI looks

Assistants cite review directories more often than company websites. Identify the two or three channels that dominate your category and focus your effort there. Reviews describing a use case (“we use it for…”, “it helped us…”) are worth much more than stars without a comment, because that is what the model can paraphrase.

A quick way to identify which channels AI checks in your category is to ask Perplexity or ChatGPT with search enabled and inspect the cited sources. If they are all Google Maps listings, that is your priority; if they are G2 and Capterra pages, focus on B2B directories. Do not guess: the answer itself tells you where you need to appear.

3. Publish answers, not slogans

Create pages that answer exactly what people ask: price, who it is for, what is included, honest comparisons with alternatives and frequently asked questions. Use the question as a heading and answer in the first paragraph. Mark up those questions with FAQPage structured data.

Write as people speak: “How much does invoicing software cost for a small business in Colombia?” is a heading a model can match to a real query; “Flexible solutions for your business” is not. Each page should be summarizable in two sentences without losing key information, because that is exactly what the assistant will do with it.

4. Let crawlers in

Check your robots.txt: GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot and Google-Extended should be able to read your public pages. Publish an /llms.txt file summarizing what your site is and its key pages.

5. Measure every month

Repeat the same questions in the same engines and record whether you appear, your position within the answer and the source cited. That record tells you which channel to work on next. The PosRank audit automates the first snapshot.

A spreadsheet is enough: one row per question, one column per engine, and “yes/no”, the position and cited source in each cell. After three months, you will see which actions made a difference and which did not, so you can stop investing in the latter.

Frequently asked questions

Does paying for advertising make AI recommend me?

Not directly. Ads do not feed generated answers; reviews, directories and public content do.

Can a small business benefit?

Yes, sometimes even more: local or niche queries have few sources, so a complete profile with recent reviews may be enough to appear.
